Instructor: Thomas Way
Dates: February 14 – 15, 2026
Capacity: Strictly Limited to 6 Artists
Elevate your photography from the accidental to the intentional. Join photographer Thomas Way for an intensive, two-day immersion into the heart of Asheville, North Carolina. This workshop is a comprehensive masterclass in candid street photography, focusing on the delicate balance between technical mastery and creative intuition. Whether you are struggling with zone focusing, manual exposure, or the hesitation that comes with street portraiture, this immersion provides the tools to bridge the gap between your vision and the shutter.
On Day One, we build a foundation of technical confidence and philosophical intent, refining your ability to read a scene before it unfolds. On Day Two, we apply those skills in the field during the exhilarating Asheville Mardi Gras Parade. Within the beautiful chaos of costumes, music, and movement, you will learn to navigate the crowd with a seamless, rhythmic presence, capturing powerful, unscripted moments that others miss.
With a strictly limited group of only six artists, you will receive personalized coaching tailored to your specific eye. This is a unique opportunity to translate the pulse of the city into a cohesive body of work, transforming your relationship with the street and your camera forever.
Day 1: The Street Photographer’s Toolkit (Saturday, Feb 14th | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
(Meeting in Downtown Asheville's iconic public spaces)
Day One is dedicated to instruction and practical mastery of the digital camera in a public setting. We will treat the city as our classroom, focusing on immediate application of techniques.
Philosophical Focus: Understanding the ethics, intention, and narrative power of the candid moment. We will review the importance of respect and observation in public spaces.
Technical Mastery: Deep dive into manual digital camera controls, focusing on fast techniques like Zone Focusing (Hyperfocal Distance) and mastering Exposure Pre-sets and using Manual Metering quickly to lock in consistent exposure settings, ensuring you never miss the shot.
Composition in the Urban Environment: Hands-on exercises in layering, framing, and using available light and shadow to create visual depth and isolate your subject from the chaos.
Guided Practice: Multiple assignment-based street walks to put theory into immediate, coached practice.
(Meeting in the South Slope District & Mardi Gras Parade Route)
Day Two is the ultimate test of skill and timing. We will apply Day 1 knowledge to the demanding environment of the Asheville Mardi Gras Parade.
Pre-Parade Briefing: Detailed instruction on Advanced Challenges—specifically Intentional Motion Blur (panning with subjects in motion) and the art of taking powerful close-up candid portraits in a crowd.
The Immersion: A challenging, hands-on field session along the parade route (3:05 PM step-off). Students will be pushed to use their intuition, timing, and quick camera adjustments to capture the costumed energy, atmosphere, and "decisive moments" of the carnival.
Debrief: Post-shoot discussion and Q&A about the high-pressure experience of shooting in a fast-paced environment. (Bring a small device—phone/tablet—to quickly review and discuss your successes.)
What You Will Learn
During this two-day immersion, we move beyond basic settings to focus on the instincts and habits of a professional street photographer. You will learn to:
The Art of Anticipation: Develop the "street eye" required to identify a scene before it reaches its peak, allowing you to be ready for the "decisive moment" rather than chasing it.
Manual Fluidity & Zone Focusing: Learn to pre-visualize your depth of field and master manual settings so your camera becomes an extension of your hand, ensuring you never miss a shot while menu-diving.
Dynamic Composition: Move beyond the rule of thirds. We will explore layering, framing within frames, and using urban geometry to create depth and tension in your images.
The Ethical Encounter: Master the delicate psychology of street portraiture. Learn how to approach strangers with confidence, when to ask for a portrait, and how to remain a respectful, seamless observer in a crowded environment.
Harnessing Chaotic Light: Learn to work with the challenging, high-contrast light of Asheville’s midday streets and the shifting colors of the Mardi Gras parade to create mood and atmosphere.
Visual Storytelling: Shift from taking "good photos" to building a cohesive narrative. You will learn how to identify themes and "connective tissue" that turn a collection of images into a compelling street essay.
Confidence in the Crowd: Gain the courage to work in dense, fast-moving environments (like the Mardi Gras Parade) without feeling overwhelmed or intrusive
